An old water pipe is harmful to health, it has been proven. Lead in the body affects the nervous system, even in small amounts. That is why the lead standard was tightened in 2014: your drinking water may contain a maximum of 10 microgrammes of lead per litre.
Fortunately, lead pipes have not been installed for a long time now. But if your pipes date from before 1970, there is a chance that they are. How do I recognise lead pipes?
- Lead pipes are grey: if your pipes have been painted over, check the original colour by scratching some paint off them.
- Lead is not magnetic, if a magnet sticks to the pipe, you can be sure it is not lead.
- Lead makes a dull sound when tapped with a metal object.
- Lead pipes are often thick, twisty tubes.
- There may be no lead pipes in a building older than 1970.
I have lead pipes! Now what?
Renovate your pipes as soon as possible. Can't have it renovated right away? Then limit the concentration of lead in the water as much as possible. You can do this by not drinking tap water that has stood still for a long time in the pipes and never using hot water directly for coffee, tea or making food.
