The tricks of unblocking

Local blockages can be fixed yourself, however, to do this you need to be handy and have tool. For total blockages, it is best to professional help enable, because in these cases there is blockage in multiple drains and it is difficult to determine exactly where the problem is.

There is a large group of do-it-yourselfers in Flanders, here are the methods they have developed to solve clogging.

• The unblocker: The suction cup on a stick is the icon of unclogging, with a few firm pumping motions you get the dirt out quickly. You can also, for example, twist apart the siphon and clean it, you will be shocked at how much dirt sometimes accumulates in there. But in both cases, you need to be lucky if the point of clogging is close by.

• The garden hose : Some bring in the garden hose and push it as far into the pipe as possible. Not really practical, because what do you do with a 90° bend?

• The unblocker spring: Effective, but often you don't get far enough to reach the point of blockage.

• Buckets of water: Continuously pouring buckets of water into the sink or bathtub will bring pressure to the site of the clog. Unfortunately, in many cases, the blockage is too strong and the water just comes up.

• Chemical unblockers : A disadvantage of this drug is that it is often very bad for the environment and that it is easy damage can inflict on pipes. Read there here more on.

• Vinegar and soda: This is already a more environmentally friendly method: dissolve vinegar and baking soda in boiling water, pour this mixture down the clogged drain and then let it soak for half an hour. To finish, flush the drain with boiling water. With this method, beware of blockages where the pipes over long lengths are caked tight with soap or grease residue. If that caustic soda cannot get through it and consequently stays there, it will petrify.
