An old water pipe is harmful to health, it has been proven. Lead in the body affects the nervous system, even in small amounts. That is why lead standards were tightened in 2014: your drinking water should contain a maximum of 10 microgrammes of lead per litre.
Fortunately, lead pipes have not been installed for a long time. But if your pipes are pre-1970, there is a chance they are. So these pipes should be replaced as soon as possible if possible. As the owner, you are responsible for the pipes after the water meter ( for pipes before the water meter, contact your water company ).
How do I recognise lead pipes?
- Lead pipes are grey: if your pipes have been painted over, feel free to check what the original colour is by scratching off some paint.
- Lead is not magnetic, if a magnet sticks to the pipe then you can be sure it is not lead.
- Lead produces a dull sound when you tap it with a metal object.
- Lead pipes are often thick winding tubes.
- No lead pipes may be present in a building older than 1970.
I have lead pipes! What now?
Getting your pipes renovated as soon as possible. Can't get it renovated right away? Then limit the lead concentration in the water as much as possible. You can do this by not drinking tap water that has been standing in the pipes for a long time and never using hot water directly to make coffee, tea or food. But don't wait too long and call Nu Flow.
