Did you know that there is asbestos in our drinking water?

"More than 19,000 kilometres of water pipes in Flanders consist of asbestos cement, better known as Eternit" writes De Standaard.

That there is asbestos in our drinking water is certain, but depending on the location the concentration is more or less. Today, drinking water is not checked for asbestos. The drinking water directives are still based on rules issued in 1993. At that time, there was too little or even no convincing evidence. However, new studies have established that there is asbestos in our drinking water.

"The danger of asbestos in our drinking water is that it increases the risk of cancer." tells EOS in its new issue of Thursday, 21 April 2015.

Joke Schauvliege (CD&V), Flemish Minister for the Environment, told De Standaard that the pipes are systematically being replaced but that this must be done with the greatest care. On the other hand, we note that progress is extremely slow.
