Do I have hard or soft water at home? And what are the consequences?

Our drinking water comes from the earth and in these layers of earth there are all kinds of salts and minerals. The more minerals, the more calcium (lime) is present in the water. Such water is called 'hard water'. The harder the water, the more lime is formed: this natural phenomenon can cause blockages.

The softer the water, the more aggressive it becomes. When water flows through your pipes, the oxygen present in the water will eat away the metal particles in the pipe and cause corrosion or rust water. If enough calcium is present in the water, it forms a protective layer so that corrosion can be prevented.

Not too hard, not too soft is ideal: the golden mean therefore applies here.

How hard is my water?

Water hardness is expressed in French degrees.

0 - 7 °F : very soft
7 - 15 °F : soft
15 - 22 °F : medium
22 - 32 °F : rather hard
32 °F and higher : very hard

Here you can check the hardness of the water at your water company and then select your town or city. If you want to test it yourself, you can buy test strips online or from a pond aquarium shop.

The water should be maximum 67°F and minimum 15°F. A certain amount of calcium in the water is healthy for the human body.

How do we do it?

  • Camera examination to detect the corrosion or lime problem (this way we map everything out).
  • We then clean and dry the damaged pipes.
  • Finally, we protect the pipes with a technique of epoxy coating that seals all leaks and restores and protects the pipes for the future. Epoxy coating is a coating based on epoxy resin and provides a protective function (it covers all breaks, leaks, etc.).
