The tricks of the trade

Local blockages can be solved by yourself, but you need to be handy and have the tools to do it. For total blockages, it is best to call in professional help, as in these cases there is a blockage in several drains and it is difficult to determine exactly where the problem is located.

There is a large group of do-it-yourselfers in Flanders, here are the methods they have developed to remedy blockages.

  • The plunger: The suction cup on a stick is the icon of the plunger, with a few firm pumping movements you can quickly loosen the dirt. You can also, for example, unscrew the siphon and clean it, you will be shocked how much dirt sometimes accumulates in there. In both cases, however, you will need the good fortune that the point of obstruction is close by.
  • The garden hose: Some people bring the garden hose in and push it as far as possible into the pipe. Not very practical, because what do you do with a 90° bend?
  • The plunger: Effective, but often not far enough to reach the point of blockage.
  • Buckets of water: Continuously pouring buckets of water into the sink or the bathtub will bring pressure to the place of the blockage. Unfortunately, in many cases the blockage is too strong and the water simply rises.
  • Chemical unblockers: A disadvantage of this remedy is that it is often very bad for the environment and can easily damage the pipes. Read more about it here .
  • Vinegar and baking soda: This is already a more environmentally friendly method: dissolve vinegar and baking soda in boiling water, pour the mixture down the blocked drain and leave for half an hour. To finish, flush the drain with boiling water. With this method, watch out for blockages where the pipes are caked with soap or grease residue over long lengths. If the caustic soda cannot get through and consequently remains in the pipes, it will petrify them.
